Council’s priorities focus on initiatives to drive the goal of building a vibrant, populous and sustainable City for current and future generations. More than $1.3 million will go towards supporting events such as cultural festivals and the Fringe, whilst the highlights of the $67 mill allocated to capital projects include:

• $6.75 million - Victoria Square stage 1
• $5.1 million - City roads/footpaths
• $5.2 million - Adelaide Aquatic Centre roof
• $1.2 million - Rundle Mall improvements
• $5 million - Victoria Park
• $2 million - lighting & CCTV surveillance
• $1.5 million - North Terrace upgrade
• $1.4 million - underground powerlines
• $1 million - Whitmore Square eco affordable housing
• $800,000 - Adelaide Park Lands Trail
• $450,000 - Central Market upgrades
• $270,000 - public art
• $190,000 - new cleansing & recycling initiatives
• $80,000 - mobile computing services
Some key priorities for council include:
• New Business & Governance Model focussed on administrative efficiencies - changing the “red tape culture” to concentrate on creating opportunities, not constraints.
• Residential growth and affordable housing initiatives – making the city the place to live for all walks
• Integrated Design Strategy – a partnership with State Government to deliver big projects
• Rundle Mall Integrated Master Plan
• Walkable/cycling friendly Adelaide with integrated sustainable transport
• Water Security Action Plan
• Climate Change Action Initiatives reducing Council’s carbon emissions by 60% by 2012;
• Sustainability Development Plan Amendment ensuring new buildings are future proof
Things I have personally focussed on delivering with the council:
• $35,000 for Renew Adelaide - a grass roots movement to activate unused buildings
• Moving the Rundle St Markets to a better location - China Town or a Rundle Mall Laneway
• $40,000 for laneway murals – bringing council owned walls to life
• An Electric Car Strategy
• More drinking fountains, it’s the little things!
• Improving services such as city cleaning & a clean city educational campaign
• Solar Panels on the Central Market via Federal Government funding
• City services via an iPhone application
• Water security Action plan
• A focus on environmental sustainability
• Doubling of the Free WiFi to 205 hot spots
• Fair funding for parkland events (i.e. Soundwave)

Are there any details available on making ADL more walking/cycling friendly ? From past experience there were always lots of words, but precious little in terms of real action. How much of the big ticket items (1&2) on the list will be spent on achieving these goals ?
I fully support your mobile information push (as well as the WIFI hotspots), but please don't just focus on one specific phone. This should be an Adelaide Mobile App - not an 'iPhone' App. We don't create Mercedes or Holden only streets - why create digital infrastructure for a specific proprietary device ?
One thing that seems completely missing from this budget is assisting ADL based Small Businesses. These are the lifeblood of the city and tend to be largely overlooked.
Keep up the good work & open communications !
Leo

Hi Leo, doing lots of good things with cycling, walkability & small business - have left a message with your business partner and look foward to having a coffee soon to chat.
